Even a detached garage is considered part of a private residence, as are toolsheds and outbuildings. They're called "Curtilage" when it shows up on a warrant where police want to search every building or structure on a piece of property but aren't sure what is actually on the property.

Next time use a video camera to capture the police visit. And you don't have to let them into your home, not without a court-ordered search warrant (your garage is part of your home.)

"Allow neither policemen nor vampires to enter your home." -anon
