By Carlos Miller
It’s not too often that a South Florida blog gets mentioned in the New York Times blog, which is maintained by the paper’s metro reporters.
But it’s not too often that a South Florida blog writes about an upcoming New York event either
Monday morning, a few hours after I had posted the article about a group of M.I.T. students who were organizing a flash mob in New York City, I started averaging more than 130 page views per hour on that single post, which is considerably higher than normal.
That is when I realized the post had been linked at the top of the New York Times‘ City Room page, the first among 12 items that were gathered from various blogs and Websites, mostly from the New York area.
The post also made another popular New York blog called Brooklyn Vegan where a guy named a “Manhattan not Brooklyn Asshole” stated the following:
WHY OH WHY do you post info like that Mr Vegan. That flash mob shit is the stupidest fucking thing going. And this one is even dumber. These idiots want to get on the #2 Train at Grand Central. Good luck finding it ya dumbasses.
In which a poster writing under “anonymous” responded with the following:
asshole not only sounds like a real asshole, he sounds like a real stick in the mud too!
Yes, the M.I.T. students posted the wrong train number, but that was quickly remedied on this blog.
Despite the heavy traffic, not a single person showed up to the flash mob, according to a Twitter posting on This American Summer, the Website in which the M.I.T. students are documenting their adventures as they travel around the country interviewing various Americans for a school project.
The students, Alexander Guerra, David Sheets, and Danbee Kim, didn’t seem too bothered about the no-shows because three hours later, they announced through Twitter that they were “at Coney Island, eating hot dogs slathered in goodness.”
I met the trio of youngsters just over a week ago after they had emailed me about interviewing me for their project. They said they found my blog interesting. As a fellow traveler and activist, I couldn’t resist meeting some of my readers. I couldn’t resist representing my hometown for their project.
Like a good host, I took them to my favorite photo spot in Miami; Watson Island beneath the MacArthur Causeway where photographers, fisherman and homeless people have long coincided in peaceful bliss in front of a perfect view of the Miami skyline. They snapped a few photos of the skyline as I explained to them how the Bank of America building changes colors.
One of them asked me if had ever been harassed by police in that spot. I told them no, which is probably one reason why it’s my favorite spot.
Then I took them to Tobacco Road, the oldest bar in Miami, where everybody was carded except me. We spent the night listening to blues and exchanging travel stories as I took a few natural light photos in the darkness of Tobacco Road. They couldn’t get over the fact that Tobacco Road closed at 5 a.m.
Then they interviewed me on video outside Tobacco Road about my arrest. And then we went our separate ways.
The following day, they followed my advice and ate lunch at Versailles, which we all know is touristy, but it is something one must experience when coming to Miami.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t one of those days where Castro’s death was announced, so the most exciting part of the lunch for these Starbucks-bred kids was the 65-cent espresso.

Where is best pizza in DaDE COUNTY???
2 Cerafin // Jul 1, 2008 at 12:21 pm
En Casolas. It’s on 17th aveue and dixie highway
3 Carlos Miller // Jul 1, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Casolas is horrible. Try Slice N Ice on 27th Ave, just south of Bird in Coconut Grove.
4 mad hatter // Jul 1, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Carlos,
Me thinks you meant Slice N Ice on 27th Avenenu (not 17th), just south of Bird in the Grove.
By the way, why did you get arrested outside of Tobacco Road?
5 mad hatter // Jul 1, 2008 at 1:06 pm
I apologize, I misread the pertinent paragraph in your post. Please ignore the second paragraph of my post, above.
6 Carlos Miller // Jul 1, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Yes, 27th Ave.
7 Bud Man // Jul 1, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Do they also serve breakfest ?? Because I get hungry in the morning, but not for pizza. I like to eat pizza for lunch.
8 Bud Man // Jul 1, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Mad Hatter, is that the one next to Amoco?
9 mad hatter // Jul 1, 2008 at 1:51 pm
That’s the one Bud Man. When I was in college I would walk over there, get a sixer at the Amoco and a pie at Slice N Ice, then walk back to my apartment drinking the beer and dodging the cops. Those were the days!

Mad Hatte,
Your last post may fall under the Carlos scratch list because od possible racial implications
11 jorge // Jul 1, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Carlos,
I know how you hate cops, but how do you feel about the federales. I mean there are so many different agencies, FBI, DEA, ATF, CSI, TITS, etc. We need to get organized, don’t youthink?
12 Carlos Miller // Jul 1, 2008 at 2:05 pm
jorge,
I don’t hate cops. I just don’t like the cops who violate people’s civil rights.
I’ve had some very good experiences with cops. Unfortunately, the bullying cops make all the other cops look bad.
13 Bud Man // Jul 1, 2008 at 2:19 pm
well do they have breakfeast or not? i need to know. and how much’s a slice of pizza? I’m on tight budget due to the high gas prices.
14 jorge // Jul 1, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Bud Man,
papo, deja ya la comemierderia! Who gives a fuck where there is good pizza, this is a blog about bashing cops because we want to take photos of them.
Carlos,
Ban this asshole already, cojones.
15 jorge // Jul 1, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Carlos,
I have the Nikon D80, with external flash and a 4 gb SDHC card. Couple of questions:
What do you think about that camera?
How many cops can I photograph at 10.1 megapizel resolition?
If for some reason the cop takes the camera and bashes it over my head, should I report it to Internal Affairs or take my lump and take the camea to an authorized Nikon repair shop?
Please let me know cause I’m setting up on a motorcycle cop right now y tiene tremendo donut en la boca!.
16 Bud Man // Jul 1, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Jorge why do you have such anger. I just wanted some information about pizza. Im new to the area .I dont have a camera. So dont hate me.
17 jorge // Jul 1, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Beer guy,
this is a blog about whiners, some people are not professional, but you are over the line papa. I don’t understand how Carlos is allowing this being that he banned me at one time for making so called “racist” remarks yet it’s okay for you to talk about masturbation? This blog is officially dead.
18 Magic City Mama // Jul 1, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Jorge-
Papo- deja el llantico ya.
You are officially ‘the cry baby’ and jealous that the NYT doesn’t even know you exist.
Budman:
Welcome! Click on my name if you want local Miami info and BTW, best pizza is @ Sir Pizza on the Key…but pizza for breakfast? You gotta draw the line somewhere.
19 jorge // Jul 1, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Magic city Man,
I am the “cry baby?” That’s like a democrat wanting to lower taxes, it’s not going to happen. You see, I was raised a little different than most of the bloggers on this site. Ever since I could remember, my parents taught me the important values of life, hard work, education, family, etc. But most importantly, my father taught me to be tough and to never let anyone step on you.
So when I see people like you and Carlos who are fighting for a stupid, meaningless cause…I think of how selfish you really are. You do not work hard, otherwise you wouldn’t have all this free time to photograph cops and prepare your blogs. Most of you are inherited money.
Whenever I think off all the wasted taxpaying dollars spent on Carlos Miller’s criminal case or all the negative publicity that our “domestic soldiers” get from him, I remember our other soldiers. The ones fighting the true battles. The ones that are fighting so you and Carlos and go out and prance around taking pictures. I have said this before and I will say it again….Write about our soldiers, write about the gas prices, write about supporting the death penalty for all scumbags…but don’t write about taking pictures of cops. It makes you look like the selfish sleazebags that you really are. I would go out on a limb and say that NONE of you would last two hours in a uniform in some of the most dangerous sections of Miami.
20 Carlos Miller // Jul 1, 2008 at 8:04 pm
jorge,
For someone who claims he is so busy working, you seem to spend a hell of a lot of time posting comments on my blog under various aliases.
21 Larry // Jul 1, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Magic City Man,
One more thing. You have proven to us how dumb you are. I don’t know the beer guy, although Carlos would probably think otherwise…but he has posted many “off hand” write ups. Do you really think the guy wants to know where there is a good pizza joint? No jodas, wake up and smell the coffee. It’s people like you that are going to vote for Hussein Obama.
22 Larry // Jul 1, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Carlos,
Could you change the last author from Larry to Jorge?
Sorry Thanks.
23 mad hatter // Jul 1, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Wow, with entertainment like this, who needs television.
I was watching a repeat of The First 48 (excellent show, by the way), but this blog is a site [pun intended] to behold!
So Carlos, what about the camera issue? I have a Canon EOS Rebel XTI 10 megapixel camera. I know, it’s not a professional camera, but I’m not a professional photog. However, I’ve heard some folks who have gotten into the hobby say that the presets and all that stuff are garbage; that it’s better to experiment with the manual settings. The problem is that I have no idea what to do with the manual settings.
Could you point me in the right direction to a good site that offers sort of a primer on photography where I could get my feet wet.
I disagree with your politics, but I’ll happily accept your advice when it comes to photography.
24 Carlos Miller // Jul 1, 2008 at 9:01 pm
mh,
It’s all on this site.
http://photo.net/learn/making-photographs/
25 mad hatter // Jul 1, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Thanks, Carlos. I’m reading the book. Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate it.
26 Magic City Mama // Jul 1, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Hmmm…where can I start?
Jorge-
I’m not a photog; I can’t take pictures worth a shit…that’s why I just hired Carlos for a gig…which would make it earned $ not inherited but who cares about semantics when monkeys like you are commenting because after all a ‘cry baby’ is someone who cries or complains frequently. Your multiple comments on EVERY CM post is a complaint plus you can’t let go of something that Carlos can do whenever le sale del culo because he owns the site.
I mean really- tantas quejas but you keep coming back for more…
Also, I’m not ‘inherited money,’ but let go of the cash envy PAPO! Just because you grew up poor eating arroz con huevos fritos and had to work for everything you have doesn’t mean that the people eating lobster worked any less. I’m of the belief that wallet size is a direct correlation to effort. Maybe your dad taught you to work hard because he was a lazy, government cheese and spam collecting immigrant that regretted never amounting to anything and wanted a different, say BETTER life for you…
I’m actually a single mommy who works very hard so my kiddo can have lo que salga del culo. I can check this, and any other blog, whenever the hell I want to because my mother showed me by example that hard work pays off- hence a job where I can scratch my ass when I feel like it versus when some pencil pusher tells me I can take 15 minutes…but yes, we ate lobster and I lived on the Key…again, because Ma’ Dukes busted her ass. She also cut me off after college saying I was no longer a mojona and had to learn to fend for myself.
Lastly, when I think of all the wasted tax payer money that has gone to defend cops who usurped their authority, it makes me want to vomit. See, my auntie was Evelyn Gort- an MD police officer who actually gave her life to protect scum bags like you that only know how to talk crap from behind the anonymity of a keyboard. I hate cops who think they are above the law and mistreat people just because they feel empowered by a polyester uniform. I hate cops who do that because it makes her sacrifice worthless.
Your ‘domestic soldiers,’ papo, bring the negative publicity upon themselves.
“don’t start nothin’; won’t be nothin’”
OBAMA in 08!
I still eat lobster.
27 Carlos Miller // Jul 1, 2008 at 9:40 pm
May Evelyn Gort rest in peace.

28 jorge // Jul 1, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Your a single mom porque ningun hombre te aguanta. Your kid won’t amount to anything. From what you are writing about yourself, tu fuiste una mal criad.
Also you seem to hide behind anonymonity yourself…Magic City Moma? Also the Gort issue…..doubt you’re related to a cop, don’t talk shit like that. I’ve been to many police burials, her being your family doesn’t give you a free pass and you don’t have a clue about police work.
Carlos….stop it….if officer Gort were alive today you would be trashing her.
29 mad hatter // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Wow! Evelyn Gort. I remember that. It’s a damn shame how that scumbag worked the system and got the charge down to a manslaughter.
It bothers me when defense attorneys know that their client is guilty, yet they work the system in the name of “zealously representing their client” to get hardended crminals binded down to manslaughter and other such charges.
By the way, Sir Pizza is a classic place, but it’s not the best pizza in Miami by far. Do you know Pizza Rustica?
30 Carlos Miller // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:02 pm
jorge,
Magic City Mama is hardly anonymous. All you have to do is click on her link and do a little research and you’ll see who she is.
Here’s a hint. She’s the proud mother who is always bragging about her son.
The only officers I criticize are the officers who don’t have a clue that photography is protected under the First Amendment. It’s very simple.
31 Carlos Miller // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:07 pm
mh,
Gino’s over Pizza Rustica any day for pizza on the Beach. Nothing beats that classic NY style.
32 jorge // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:18 pm
her site is MiamiBeach411, what research is done to find her?
33 jorge // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:24 pm
What is a lady in CT doing on a Miami Beach website? Family connections - Michelle is my sister. Michelle and Gus hooked me up with one of the best jobs possible for a stay-at-home Mom (I have a 5-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl). Between playdates and park days and laundry and cleaning, I sit at the computer adding (hopefully) valuable info for you!
Rest my case! She’s a zero! No real job! Go back to Connecticut, drop dead.
34 Carlos Miller // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:27 pm
jorge,
It’s a good thing you’re not a cop because you wouldn’t be able to gather the evidence and follow a clue if it were spelled out for you on a black and white web page.
35 Magic City Mama // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Jorge-
I’m a single mom because I was irresponsible. I decided not to punish the gift God sent me and was smart enough to not wallow in self-pity and settle for the sperm donor but rather walked away from a loser that would only teach someone how to be ‘bad.’ In other words, I’m a ’single mom’ because I chose to not marry my son’s biological father.
Luckily, it’s the best damn decision I’ve ever made. Actually, the irony- that loser told me he was pulled over with weed last weekend but didn’t get the ticket because the cop took his drugs…
Carlos tells the truth- I’ve made no claim to anonymity by adding my JOB url, so you can see that I actually work versus living off of inherited $. I back my shit up PAPO- no trash talkin’ here.
36 Magic City Mama // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:33 pm
CT? A daughter?
Me thinks you read the wrong thing Jorgito. Laurie is Michelle’s sister.
I’m Suzy.
uh huh, stop drooling…
37 discarted // Jul 1, 2008 at 11:27 pm
is this guy jorge a cop? seems like one to me.
and jorge, why don’t you leave us a way to contact you
38 Carlos Miller // Jul 1, 2008 at 11:30 pm
discarted,
I think they’re all cops and I’m hoping they will learn something from this site.
39 Henry Gomez // Jul 1, 2008 at 11:51 pm
I went to the Grand Central terminal and didn’t see anything that I would describe as a “flash mob”.
Too bad. I was looking forward to it.
40 jorge // Jul 2, 2008 at 8:35 am
Discarted,
Why would I want you losers to contact me?
Magic City,
I saw the picture, you belong en la cocina, like the rest.
Carlos,
I’m starting to get bored. This blog was entertaining for about a week, I’m considering moving on.
41 Lazaro // Jul 2, 2008 at 8:41 am
I saw the picture too, yo le paso la cuenta.
42 mad hatter // Jul 2, 2008 at 9:30 am
Carlos,
Don’t be so condescending and hostile, it’s a detriment to your otherwise charming personality. As far as learning from your blog, I try to learn from all my experiences.
By the way, where is Gino’s? Are you referring to the Gino’s italian restaurant on 21st Street?
Also, does anyone remember the name of the strip club that is, or used to be, on Collins and 21st Street during the mid 90s? It had a cult-like following but now I can’t recalll the name.
Magic City Mama,
Nice job with Nick’s blog, he’s got a great family there.
Saw the pics. No es como para tirar cohetes en dia de fiesta, pero en tiempo de guerra todo hueco es trinchera.
43 Carlos Miller // Jul 2, 2008 at 9:33 am
Jorge aka Lazaro,
You are a real gentleman. Be proud.
mh,
There are several Gino’s but the best one is on Alton and 16th, next to Taco Rico. It’s open 24 hours.
44 mad hatter // Jul 2, 2008 at 9:39 am
Yes, now I remember. I used to see their delivery guys everywhere. I wonder if the Gino’s italian restaurant still exists (on Collins and 21st). I guess that’s a question for the MCM.
I’d still appreciate info on the strip club, it’s on the tip of my tongue and it’s driving me crazy. If I don’t find that name out soon I might end up misappropriating someone’s digital camera and zeroing out the memory card (try recovering that).
45 Magic City Mama // Jul 2, 2008 at 9:43 am
Wow
It takes a big man to insult a preschooler and a mom.
Quien es el mal criado?
46 Magic City Mama // Jul 2, 2008 at 9:44 am
BTW,
Thanks for the kitchen compliments- guess that means you were reading my recipes on MB411. My boss will love that.
