Calling all bloggers, journalists, activists, photography buffs, music lovers and spoken word aficionados

You are cordially invited to attend the Photography is a First Amendment Right fund raiser Saturday afternoon in Dania Beach.

A portion of the proceeds will go toward my mounting legal fees as I prove my innocence against the five Miami police officers who arrested me after photographing them against their wishes.

A portion will also go towards the Society of Professional Journalists Legal Defense Fund, which aids reporters and photographers nationwide in defending the freedom of speech and press guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Grace Cafe and Galleries, 49 North Federal Highway in Dania Beach.

I will provide several photos to be featured in a silent auction and I will also perform some spoken word poetry.

The silent auction will also includes works from South Florida photographers Danny Hammontree, Edward Regan, Eileen Soler and Wendy Doscher-Smith

Other entertainment includes the Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra as well as Tortas y Tacones (Sandwiches and Heels) from www.category305.com, the online magazine I was on assignment for the night of my arrest.

Prizes will be raffled off and sandwiches, salads, wraps and beverages will be available for purchase. Big Mama will be cooking and serving her tasty barbecue fare as well. Proceeds from the barbecue will go Team of Life, Inc., a Fort Lauderdale-based charity that assists children.

Many thanks to Clare Vickery, who owns Grace Cafe and Galleries, for providing us with space for our event. Her two-story historic building houses represents more than 25 artists. There’s also a stained glass studio, vintage and handmade jewelry, furniture and designer dolls.

DIRECTIONS - I-95 to Stirling Road, head to U.S. 1 At U.S. 1 (Federal Highway) turn left (north). Turn left on to Dania Beach Blvd. (west). Then make first right turn on to First Ave. Go about 400 feet, Grace’s rear parking lot is on right. Clare says additional parking is available along First Avenue and in the Dania Beach City Hall parking lot.

If you have any questions, please post them here.

Sorry, you interfered with a police action. You hopefully will get what you deserve. Stop whining about it on DU. No one cares!

Next time a cop tells you to move on I suggest you do it.

Hey Carlos, just wanted to let you know that we are really looking forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks down here at the lockup.

Bring some K-Y or something similar with you. The first night is the toughest, after that I’ll look after you.

    See you in a bit!

P.S. - Next time the cops tell you to move along, you might want to do what you’re told. They tell you to get out of the area to protect not only your safety but so that you don’t whip up the crowd and make the situation worse.

Oh, one last thing….I dare you to delete this you freedom of speech loving hypocrite.

I really have to hand it to you guys from Conservative Underground (motto: Born out of an obsessive desire to stalk Democratic Underground members).

Over the last three days, you guys have proven to be my blog’s most committed fans. It’s people like you who provide traffic during the early days of a blog that help get it off the ground. I really do appreciate it.

In fact, over the last three days, more people from CU clicked on my blog than from DU, despite the fact that CU’s membership is but a fragment of DU’s membership.

It’s too bad you are unable to generate any actual discussion other than leaving a bunch of witless and tasteless insults.

However, I won’t delete any of the juvenile posts as they provide insight into the mindset of the spineless, faceless hypocrites who would never dare say those things to my face.

After all, Freedom of Speech is safe when you speak your mind from behind an anonymous Internet username.

It’s a little more precarious when you speak your mind in real life using your real name knowing it could result in real consequences.

That’s the difference between me and you.

I heard there were great T-shirts available that say “Photography is not a crime. It’s a 1st Amendment right.”
Can you put a picture of the shirt on your blog, the price and how we can buy one? Thanks
